Labour Movement in the Global South: Trade Unions in Sri Lanka – New Possibilities a Talk by Dr. Janaka Biyanwila
Unions across the globe are grappling with the issue of renewal. Under attack from neo-liberal market-driven politics, most unions are narrowing their strategies to the workplace, while some are linking workplace issues with broader local, national and global issues. This presentation focuses on the new possibilities of unions in Sri Lanka. While acknowledging the diversity of experiences and forms of resistance in the global South, the presentation will explore issues of gender, ethnicity and labour internationalism.
The presentation aimed to encourage a conversation around labour issues as well as co-operation among those working on a range of concerns that relate to transforming the realm of work.
