Research and knowledge production is one of the main objectives of the SSA. The SSA has drawn on multidisciplinary pathways not just to apply theoretical frameworks but also contribute to the formulation of social theory that emanates from the global south. The SSA’s work extends beyond academia and seeks to address and inform interventions for a more equitable and democratic society. Over the years the SSA has pursued a number of research projects on areas such as ethnicity, the political economy of development, gender equity, democracy, conflict resolution, social transformation, labour and human rights. The SSA’s current research programmes focus on the following themes:

Women, Political Participation and Addressing the Gender Deficit in Sri Lanka
The State of Democracy in Sri Lanka and South Asia
Understanding the Dynamics of Post-Civil War Reconciliation
