Events & Activities – Conference
In March 1992 a conference was held in Sri Lanka organized by the SSA with participation of delegates from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. The papers presented were published in 1996 by Kali for Women in a book entitled “Embodied Violence: Communalising Women’s Sexuality in South Asia” edited by Kumari Jayawardena and Malathi de Alwis. The contributors were Ritu Menon, Kamla Bhasin, Kalpana Kannabiran, Shahnaz Rouse, Sonia Nishat Amin, Malathi de Alwis, Jasodhara Bagchi, Paola Bacchetta, Neloufer de Mel, Uma Chakravarti, Kumkum Sanghari and Sudesh Vaid.
Events & Activities – Workshop
The workshop was held from 27-29th July 2012 at the Sarvodaya Development Educational Institute, Aluthgama- Bandaragama. In total 57 enumerators were trained in field research and survey methodology. Two prominent Indian scholars, Prof. Sandeep Shastri and Prof. Sanjay Kumar from the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, (CSDS) New Delhi participated as resource persons and trainers. This workshop was an important pre-requisite in order to carry out the Sri Lankan arm of the State of Democracy in South Asia survey that is being spearheaded by SSA.
Events & Activities – Discussion
SSA and the Women and Media Collective co-hosted an informal discussion on “Gender and Politics in Pakistan” on the 23rd of May 2013 at SSA. The main discussant was Ms. Nighat Khan, a prominent feminist scholar and activist from Pakistan. She is also the Executive Director of the Applied Socio-Economic Research (ASR) Resource Centre, Lahore, Pakistan. Ms. Khan shared her views on gender and politics in Pakistan, and focused special attention on the recently concluded elections in Pakistan.
The discussion was chaired by Sepali Kottegoda, the Executive Director of the Women and Media Collective.
