About

Polity like its predecessor Pravada (1991-2003) is primarily a left forum for debate and discussion that advances democracy, state reform, gender and socio-economic equality and justice in Sri Lanka, while interested in South Asia and the world. It has published scholarly essays and engaged commentaries on politics, power, history, women, ethnicity, religion, economy, nationalisms, violence, environment and much more. Polity enters the digital age with a view to expanding its reach and stimulating wider and more diverse interaction with its content and concerns. In addition to conventional articles based on research and analysis, Polity also features creative writing and illustration (short stories, poems, graphic art), works-in-progress, interviews, field notes, photo essays, and extended book, drama, and film reviews.

Pravada was founded by Charles Abeysekera, Kumari Jayawardena, and Jayadeva Uyangoda. Past editors of Pravada and Polity have been Shani Jayawardena, Lakmali Gunawardena, Vivimarie Van Der Poorten, Rasika Chandrasekera, Morina Perera, Chandrika Widanapathirana, and Andi Schubert. Dominic Esler was Polity‘s book review editor between August 2022 and August 2023. Polity is currently edited by Chulani Kodikara, Hasini Lecamwasam, and Balasingham Skanthakumar.
