Mr. Balasingham Skanthakumar

Balasingham Skanthakumar’s current research interests include plantation communities, agrarian political economy, and the history and evolution of the labour and left movements. He has published on development policy; human rights; language rights; workers’ rights; and Muslim personal law. He read law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University; where he was active in student politics, and in anti-racist and international solidarity campaigns. He subsequently held teaching appointments at SOAS; while researching labour relations in late 20th century Sri Lanka. Before joining SSA, he previously directed the economic, social and cultural rights programme of a legal research and advocacy organisation in Colombo. He is on the civil society panel of the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration; and is a member of the board of the Women’s Education and Research Centre (WERC).
